Modifiers and combos — Paloma POS 2

This article is about Paloma POS 2 — the new Paloma touchscreen point-of-sale app. It explains how to build a line's composition with the modifier editor, how a modifier group's price affects the total, how to re-edit a combo line's composition right in the check, and which permission these actions need. If you are not sure this is your app, start with «How to tell you have Paloma POS 2». Adding items to an order is covered in «Quick sale».

Overview

  • Modifiers are variants and add-ons for an item (size, sauce, doneness). They are collected into groups, and groups are attached to an item.
  • A combo is a line built from several groups: when it is added to the order the POS opens a composition editor where the cashier picks options.
  • A combo line in the check has no separate price override — instead of a price button the POS gives you the composition editor. The total is computed from the item price, option prices, and group prices.
  • A modifier group can carry its own «Group price (added to each selected option)», which is added to every option selected in that group.

Step 1. Build the composition when adding

When you add an item that has modifier groups attached, the POS opens a composition sheet:

  1. On the left (a vertical list on a wide screen, a chip rail on a phone) is the group navigator. Tap a group to open its options on the right.
  2. Inside the group, check the options you need. The hint above the options tells you how many to pick: «Pick any», «Pick up to N», «Pick at least N» — a required group is marked accordingly.
  3. If there are many options, use the «Search options…» field.
  4. As you pick, a live combo receipt titled «Your combo» updates on the right: it shows an «at item price» line, the selected «Modifiers» as a separate amount, and the overall «Total».
  5. Add a «Note» to the line if needed (for example, preparation details).
  6. When the composition is ready, tap «Add» — the line with its selected composition lands in the cart.

Step 2. Re-edit a combo line in the check

An already-added combo line can be rebuilt without deleting it:

  1. Select the combo line in the cart.
  2. Tap the composition-editor icon (tooltip «Edit modifiers») — the same sheet reopens with the group navigator and the live «Your combo» receipt.
  3. Change the option selection and tap «Add» — the line total recalculates.

A combo line has no «Change price» button like a regular item: a combo's price comes from its composition, so the POS opens the composition editor instead of a manual price entry. Manual price entry stays available only for regular lines — see «Quick sale».

Step 3. Permission for composition and price

Both the combo composition editor and manual price entry for a regular line are governed by one permission — «Custom price»:

  • With this right, the cashier can open a combo's composition editor and change regular-item prices.
  • Without it, the composition-editor icon on a combo line is unavailable, and a regular price cannot be changed.

The permission is granted by an administrator in employee access settings.

Step 4. Configure a group and its price (administrator)

Modifiers are set up ahead of time in the «Modifiers» editor (opened from the POS side menu):

  1. Open «Modifiers» and select a group or create a new one — the form title reads «Edit group» or «Add group».
  2. Set the selection rule: the «Required» switch (the cashier must pick at least one option) and «Allow multiple selections»; for multi-select, set «Max selections (0 / blank = unlimited)».
  3. In «Group price (added to each selected option)» you can set a surcharge — it is added to every option selected in this group.
  4. In the «Options» section add the variants. Each option has its own «Incremental price».
  5. Save. The change syncs to the cloud when connected.

After saving, the group form returns with its option list — it must not strand on a loading spinner. The group price you set is stored and comes back when you reopen the same group.

Common problems

  • "Не удалось загрузить модификаторы: {reason}" — the modifier catalog did not load: tap the cloud sync icon.
  • «This group is not available locally.» — the group has not synced to this device yet. Wait for sync (the indicator sits next to the interface) and reopen it.
  • «This option is not available locally.» — the same for a single option: wait for sync and retry.
  • «Name is required.» — the group or option was saved without a name. Fill in the name and save.
  • «Pick a parent group first.» — an option cannot be saved without a group. Open the group and add the option inside it.
  • «Couldn't save. Try again.» — the save failed. Retry; if it persists, check connectivity and sync.
  • A combo line has no change-price button — this is normal: a combo's price comes from its composition. Rebuild the line through the composition editor (the icon with the «Edit modifiers» tooltip).
  • The composition-editor icon is unavailable — the employee lacks the «Custom price» right. An administrator grants it.

FAQ

How is a modifier different from a combo?

A modifier is a variant or add-on for one item (sauce, size). A combo is a line built from several modifier groups whose composition the cashier picks when adding it. Under the hood both are configured through modifier groups.

Why does a combo have no «Change price» button?

A combo's price is the sum of the item price, the selected option prices, and the group prices, so a manual price is not needed. Instead the POS gives you the composition editor: change the option selection and the line total recalculates itself.

How does a group price affect the total?

«Group price» is added to each option selected in that group. If two options are picked in a group, the group surcharge counts for both. Separately, each option can carry its own «Incremental price».

The cashier can't open the composition editor. Why?

It needs the «Custom price» right — the same permission that governs manual price entry for regular items. Ask an administrator to grant it in access settings.

I created a group in the editor but it's missing on the POS. What now?

Wait for sync — modifier changes go to the cloud when connected and arrive on the POS. If you see «This group is not available locally.», the data has not reached the device yet; retry later.
