Overview

ABC analysis sorts items by descending sales amount and splits the list into three categories by cumulative percentage:

CategoryWhat it isTypical share
APositions producing the bulk of revenueup to threshold A (80% by default)
BMid-contribution positionsfrom threshold A to threshold B (95% by default)
CThe tail — rare, low-impact positionseverything above threshold B

The classification is computed twice and independently: by amount and by quantity. An item can be A by money and C by units — an expensive rare position; the reverse combination means a cheap fast mover.

Options

OptionWhat it does
By retail priceCalculate contribution at selling price
By purchase priceCalculate contribution at purchase price
Group by groupsBreak the result down by item group with per-group totals
With modificationsCount item modifiers separately
With stockAdd a current stock column

Choosing between retail and purchase price changes not only the numbers but the composition of the categories: revenue favours high-margin positions, purchase price favours those absorbing the most money in procurement. Menu decisions usually use retail; stock decisions use purchase.

Result

Above the table sit the ABC summary — item count and total per category — and a Pareto chart showing cumulative contribution.

Table columns: name, group, price, amount, share of amount, quantity, share of quantity, category by amount, and category by quantity. With With stock enabled, a stock column is added.

Tips

  • The With stock option turns the analysis into a purchasing tool: a category C item with large stock is frozen cash.
  • The period must be representative. Over two or three days, category A fills with random positions; use a month or more.
  • The 80/95 thresholds are an industry convention, not a system requirement. Adjust them if the assortment is very narrow or very wide.
