Printers — Paloma POS 2

This article is about Paloma POS 2 — the new Paloma register app for a tablet, POS terminal, or Windows device. If you are not sure which product you have, start with «How to tell you have Paloma POS 2». This article covers which printers the register supports and how to connect them (network and USB ESC/POS, the built-in Sunmi/Valor printer, a Windows printer, and a label printer), auto-discovery, test printing, the print queue and clearing it, and what to do when a receipt won't print or a printer is unreachable.

Overview

  • One list for all print hardware. Printers are configured in one place: «Settings»«Devices»«Print»«Hardware & Printers». You see the printer list, each printer's status, and the «Add printer» button.
  • Different connection types. The register prints to a network (LAN) thermal printer by IP, to a USB printer, to the built-in printer of a Sunmi/Valor terminal, to a printer installed in Windows, and to a label printer. The connection type is chosen in the printer's card under «Connection».
  • Auto-discovery. A USB printer is detected automatically when you plug it in; network printers are found by scanning the local network when auto-discovery is on.
  • Printer role. Every printer has a «Role»«Receipt», «Kitchen», or «Kitchen + receipt» — which decides what prints on it.
  • Test print. Check a printer with «Test print» in its card, or «Test all printers» at once.
  • The print queue runs in the background. Printing never blocks the register: jobs go into a queue and print in the background. A stuck queue can be cleared.

Where printers are configured

  1. Open «Settings».
  2. Go to «Devices» (printers, payment and fiscal devices, display).
  3. Open «Print», then «Hardware & Printers».

The printer list opens. If nothing is configured yet, the register shows «No printers configured» with the hint «Plug a USB printer — we'll detect it automatically». To add a printer manually, tap «Add printer».

Printer types and connection

The connection type is set in the printer's card under «Connection». The register supports:

  • Network (LAN) ESC/POS. A thermal printer on the same network over Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Enter the «Host (IP address)» and «Port» (usually 9100). The «Scan for LAN printers» button helps find it on the network.
  • USB ESC/POS. A printer connected to the tablet/terminal by a USB cable (via an OTG adapter on Android). Tap «Pick USB device» and choose the printer.
  • Built-in Sunmi/Valor printer. On Sunmi and Valor terminals with a built-in receipt printer, the register uses it directly — in the connection it appears as the «Sunmi built-in printer» (or just «Built-in printer»). No cable or IP address is needed.
  • Windows printer. On a Windows device the register prints to a printer installed in the system. A direct USB path that bypasses the Windows driver is marked «Raw USB (auto-discovered)».
  • Label printer. For weighed and piece labels. In the card, set «Printer type» to «Label» (the default is «Receipt»). A label printer is kept out of receipt and kitchen printing.

Each printer also has a «Role» («Receipt» / «Kitchen» / «Kitchen + receipt»), a «Paper width», a paper cut option, a cash drawer option («Cash drawer connected to this printer»), and a buzzer.

Auto-discovery

USB printer

Plug the printer into the register device by USB. The register detects it automatically and shows «Printer found: …», then asks «Where should this printer print?» — choose «Kitchen», «Receipt», or «Both». The printer then appears in the list.

Network (LAN) printer

Network auto-discovery is controlled by the «Auto-discover network (LAN) printers» toggle in the printer list. When on, the register scans the local network, finds new printers, and updates the IP address of an already-saved printer if it changed. When off, the register does not scan the network; this does not affect USB printers.

If a network printer isn't found, it is probably on a different subnet (a factory IP). The printer card offers the hint «Printer not found?» with «Relocate over USB» and (on Windows) «Find printer on another network» to move the printer into your network.

Adding a printer manually

  1. In the printer list, tap «Add printer».
  2. Give it a name (for example, "Kitchen TM-m30") and, if needed, a station/subdivision.
  3. Under «Connection», choose the type and enter the address: network — «Host (IP address)» and «Port»; USB — «Pick USB device»; Bluetooth — the Bluetooth address.
  4. Set «Printer type» («Receipt» or «Label»), «Role», and «Paper width».
  5. Save, then check it with «Test print».

Test printing

  • One printer. In its card tap «Test print» (in the list, the «Test print» button). If it's fine, the register shows: «Test print sent — check the printer for paper output. Failures appear in the developer log.».
  • All at once. In the printer list tap «Test all printers» — the register sends a test to every enabled printer and reports how many passed and how many failed.

If the test is sent but no paper comes out, the register did its part; check the printer itself: paper, power, and connection (cable or network).

The print queue and clearing it

In Paloma POS 2 printing never blocks the register: jobs go into a queue and print in the background, so the register doesn't "freeze" even if a printer is busy or unreachable on the network. Pending jobs are shown in the printer list under «Pending jobs (N)».

If the queue builds up (for example, a printer was unreachable for a while) and gets in the way, you can clear it:

  1. In the printer list, in the «Pending jobs» block, tap «Clear queue».
  2. The register asks «Clear print queue?» with the text «Delete all N jobs from the queue? This cannot be undone.».
  3. Confirm with «Clear».

You can also clear the queue from the order-list side drawer — a red «Clear print queue (N)» row appears there when too many jobs pile up.

If several receipts fail to print, a banner appears at the top like «N receipts failed to print» with an «Open settings» button that leads to the printer list, where hardware status is visible.

Common problems

  • "Не удаётся достучаться до принтера по адресу…" — the printer does not answer at its address: check power, network and the address in the settings.
  • "ошибка драйвера" / "ошибка отрисовки" in the print job details — the first is about the printer itself, the second about the print-form template.
  • "Не удалось отправить на принтер." / "Ошибка принтера — нажмите значок облачной синхронизации…" — the details are in the sync panel: which printer failed and with what error.
  • "Не удалось напечатать чек" on a cash in/out — the operation is recorded; only its receipt did not print.
  • "Не удалось напечатать — обратитесь к сотруднику" — a kiosk message the customer sees; hand the receipt over manually.
  • "Принтер не найден. Касса работает на фиксированном адресе…" — the device is on another subnet; see Hardware troubleshooting.
  • «No printers configured» — no printer has been added yet. Plug one in by USB (it's detected automatically) or tap «Add printer».
  • «Out of paper» — insert a roll and print again.
  • «Printer not ready» — the printer is busy, its cover is open, or it isn't operational. Check it and retry.
  • «Write fault — reconnect the printer» — a USB link failure. Unplug and replug the cable.
  • «Grant USB access to this printer, then print again» — the device asked for USB access. Allow it in the popup and retry.
  • «Print timed out — check printer paper and power» — the printer didn't answer in time. Check power, paper, and the link.
  • «Network unreachable — check Ethernet cable or WiFi» — the register device lost the network. Check its network connection.
  • «Cannot reach printer at … — check IP address and subnet» — the network printer is unreachable at that IP. Make sure it's powered on and on the same network; update the IP or use auto-discovery if needed.
  • «The printer at … refused connection — check printer power and that it accepts TCP prints» — the printer is on the network but not accepting prints on that port. Check the port (usually 9100) and the printer's settings.
  • «Offline» / «Status unknown» — the printer's status in the list. «Offline» means the register can't see it: check power and network. «Online» means it's reachable.
  • The queue won't drain — if jobs pile up under «Pending jobs (N)» and don't print, fix the cause (paper, power, network), then clear the stuck queue with «Clear queue».

FAQ

How does the register recognize my printer over USB?

Plug the printer in by USB — the register detects it automatically, shows «Printer found: …», then asks for a role («Kitchen», «Receipt», or «Both»). After that it appears in the list. Nothing to type by hand.

What's the difference between the Receipt, Kitchen, and Kitchen + receipt roles?

«Receipt» prints receipts and guest bills. «Kitchen» prints kitchen tickets for the line. «Kitchen + receipt» does both on one printer. The role is set in the printer card under «Role». For receipts and bills see «Receipt & bill»; kitchen tickets print to any printer with a kitchen role.

Do I need a separate printer for a built-in Sunmi or Valor terminal?

No. On Sunmi and Valor terminals with a built-in receipt printer, the register prints straight to it — in the connection it shows as the «Built-in printer». No cable or IP address is required.

How do I set up a label printer?

Add a printer and set «Printer type» to «Label». Such a printer prints weighed and piece labels and takes no part in receipt or kitchen printing.

A receipt won't print. How do I find the problem?

First run «Test print» in the printer card. If the test prints, the printer is fine and the problem is with the specific job. If the test doesn't print, check paper, power, and the link (USB cable, or IP and network for a network printer). The exact error text is shown in the printer list and in popup messages.

How do I clear a stuck print queue?

In the printer list, in the «Pending jobs» block, tap «Clear queue» and confirm with «Clear». Or open the order-list side drawer and tap «Clear print queue (N)». The queue clears, but you still need to fix the cause (an unreachable printer) separately.
